Observers were evolved humans from one possible future of mankind. In an attempt to ensure their existence and brain evolution, they used their time period’s technology, which allowed them to travel through time and space. Because of that technology, they existed quite literally “outside” of time. In their own future, the world is damaged beyond repair and unsustainable.
